THING #23, THING #23, THING #23 . . . HIP HIP HOORAY, THING #23!

I really enjoyed creating my own blog. Perhaps I am ready to create myspace. My least favorite activity was adding RSS feeds, but the podcast exercise was redeeming. I had a lot of fun creating Meez, though HLO posted a scathing review. And I now have the grand ambition to catalog my home library with Library Thing.

These activities provoked many useful ideas like celebrating the library in innovative ways and creating shared documents.

I found that peer support was very valuable to my learning experience. And now I will impatiently wait for my MP3 player and 23 surprises from my girl!

I am working very hard to finish 23 Things on time so that I can earn an MP3 player. I am jazzed that we will be able to download audio books from Overdrive for FREE. I found lots of books that I am interested in, one of which is The Wee Free Men, which several students raved about in YA Literature and Materials.

I took a look at the three suggested popular podcast directories and through Yahoo Podcasts I found Story Salon, Southern California's longest running weekly storytelling ensemble. It took me some time, but with Susan's help I managed to add its RSS feed to my Bloglines account. I've found this exercise to be both interesting and challenging. I like the podcast feeds more so than the news feeds.

Me want book about cookies . . . and a glass of milk.

If you give a mouse a cookie, he'll want a glass of milk. If you give Cookie Monster a book about cookies, he'll want a glass of milk too.

It was a lot of fun to explore YouTube, but boy is it time consuming. You can't watch just one!

I looked at a few more, because you can't watch just one, and found I Love My Library, a contest submission from WSHS. It's a library rap.

Two of my new favorite sites I discovered from Web 2.0 Awards are One Sentence, recommended to me by Mary, and Arcplay. One Sentence is a site where true stories are told in one sentence. Some are laugh out loud funny, others are confessional, and many are quite sad. This site demonstrate the power of the word. Just a few words can express great emotion.

I had a lot of fun playing puzzle games at Arcplay. I beat the computer twice playing the classic Connect 4 and reached level 5 in the Quick Pic memory game before Game Over.

In Zoho Writer, I created a weekly schedule document then shared it with Jackie. Possibly through shared documents Jackie and I can work on weekly schedules simultaneously which would be more efficient than our current process.

I added my blog to the Favorite Blogs page then took some time to create a new page and add it to the sandbox. I am curious to see if anyone will add a unique talent to Stupid Human Tricks.

What I found interesting about wikis - the varied applications within libraries. I love the Princeton Public Library's Book Lovers Wiki. This website allowed customers to participate in the summer reading program and share book reviews. This year our adult and teen summer reading participants wrote book reviews. A wiki similar to the Book Lovers Wiki would be a great way to share these reviews next year.

The Library 2.0 in 15 Minutes a Day is similar to our 23 Things.

I also found something potentially extremely useful on the Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki . . . EZ Library Programs. Essentially, this is a search engine for library programs. Don't reinvent the wheel! Check it out.

I really liked Michael Stephens's perspective on Library 2.0, "Into a New World of Librarianship." He describes the library as a social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience. While, Dr. Wendy Schultz, in "To a Temporary Place in Time," writes libraries are convocations of people, ideas, and artifacts in dynamic exchange. I get the same feeling from both of these descriptions. Though much of libraries are predicted to be virtual, they will serve people with experienced tour guides. And in this way libraries will remain human.

CCPL has come a long way baby! We have made great strides in becoming participatory and barrier free user centered libraries.

According to Stephens, libraries in the new world still allow staff time to play and learn . . . gotta love that! Oh, and I learned a new word . . . biblioblogosphere. Try saying that three times fast.

Once I figured out how to search for "Learning 2.0" in Blog posts, in tags, and in the Blog Directory . . . using the advanced search, I discovered the results are different. This makes sense as Blog posts, videos, and photos are tagged "Learning 2.0."

Many of the top favorited blog, top searches, and top blogs are in other languages . . . interesting. Heather, Owen Wilson is currently the 9th top search!

Because the Del.icio.us tutorial is still disabled, I checked out the other option. Kathleen Gilroy's podcast demonstrates Del.icio.us's potential for research assistance. Though it is not simply an easy way to create bookmarks that can be accessed from anywhere, this is a very nice application. I would be interested in bookmarking resources for storytellers.

I checked out MERLIN. MERLIN'S links to library news blogs is really useful. I did not find the methods of finding feeds particularly easy. It was easier to add feeds from the Bloglines suggestions.

Well, I have set up my Bloglines account. To be honest I didn't care for this exercise. I found it difficult to find ten feeds that I was interested in subscribing to. It would really benefit me to be able to subscribe to the children's book reviews in each of the professional magazines that we circulate. I would love to be able to read them in just one place! I was excited to add the iTunes Top 25 Songs feed, until I found that a significant number of the top 25 come from "High School Musical 2" . . . how disappointing. Have I missed some especially cool feeds?

I checked out FD Toy's Trading Card Maker and looked at some Librarian Trading Cards like this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/86901326@N00/421431734/. Dawn of the Read is too cool! I could pull off purple hair . . . right? According to our "Dress Policy and Guidelines" facial piercings and tattoos are permissible, is purple hair as well?

I think that I would like to make a librarian trading card one day, but rather than a photo, I envision a more abtract representation of myself. Hmm, what might that be . . . a pair of loud britches?

I have explored Flickr. The North City Library is using it to sponsor a community photography project, "I Love the North City Library" . . . how fun! We could do something similar. Customers could show their love by sharing photos of "Corky on Vacation" using Flickr. Technically my first post was for Thing #2, but here it goes again . . . over the weekend I created Mii. I can tell you that she is way cute! Her favorite color is yellow, she has a killer hair cut, and her specs are totally awesome! She is not a bad bowler, but she is a bit too enthusiastic about tennis . . . my arm hurts.

I think that habit 3 . . . view problems as challenges that can be learned from is a bit of healthy advice, but the habit that speaks to me the most is habit 71/2 . . . Play, Be Curious, and Read! The opportunity to learn through play is what attracts me to librarianship and more specifically to children's services. After all, the Hokey Pokey is truly what it is all about.
